Handed an entire law firm’s worth of clients after a year away recovering from prescription pill addiction is enough to make anyone bow under pressure. Throw in the fact you’re replacing someone because they were murdered? Well, now you’ve got some serious stakes on your hand.
But what exactly happened to Haller, his loved ones, and the high-profile case of a video game billionaire accused of killing his wife?
Well, look no further. Here’s everything that went down – and how that could impact a potential season two…

Work Life: What happened in the Trevor Elliott case?
Trevor Elliott (Christopher Gorham) devoutly maintained his innocence throughout the show’s run after being accused of murdering his wife, Lara, and her lover, Jan Rilz.
The pair were found shot dead at point blank range in their bedroom, with Trevor calling the police after finding their bodies.
The accused was the head of Parallax Games, and their biggest selling point in their dark utopia best-seller Nocturna was how realistic they managed to make the characters. So realistic in fact, that rivals wanted the coding.
Trevor’s defence would frequently change, but he would claim it was simply to hide something bigger and worse that Haller (Manuel Garcia-Rulfo) shouldn’t have known.

At one point, he even revealed the entire case had ties to the Russian mob due to a business deal that would collapse if Haller didn’t get him off.
Ultimately, he was declared not guilty after it was successfully argued he couldn’t have committed the murder and then got rid of his bloodied clothes and gun in the seven-minute window he would have had to have done it in.
But it turns out all was not as it seems, and this perseverant businessman had conned Haller as well as the jury into believing his innocence. While he was a college roommate of a Russian mobster’s son, they hated each other and had nothing to do with each other this many years on.
What it actually came down to was money and power – and making sure both were kept from his wife.
Lana was a skilled coder and the person behind Parallax’s success. However, Trevor got the glory as she made the code while working at a rival company, and everything she created there would, by contract, be theirs. So instead she handed it to Trevor to set up his own company, with no one any the wiser.
But after 10 years of him taking credit for her work, she was getting fed up, and started an affair in their unhappy marriage as she prepared to leave Trevor and get the truth out there. With no prenup, she stood to gain 50% of everything he owned… including the company.
He couldn’t allow that, so killed her and had a drone get the gun and his bloodied clothes away from the scene when the cops arrived so they were impossible to find.
Smug with his victory, Trevor moved forward with a multi-million dollar sale of his company and even threw a party to celebrate.
But his pride was short-lived when Carol Dubois, a relative of Jan Rilz, shot him dead in front of a crowd.
Heller later deduced that one of the judges looking over his cases on his return to work was behind the scheme to tamper with juries (in exchange for a six-figure sum every time).

It seems work-obsessed Heller can’t resist taking his job home with him – with not one but two ex-wives working closely in the field with him.
He later hired former client and recovering addict Izzy as his Lincoln driver in a bid to help her (and him) stay sober.
While his relationship with Lorna (Becki Newton) moved into far more platonic territory, his connection to Maggie (Neve Campbell) – a lawyer in the district attorney’s office – remained prominent, particularly due to their teen daughter, Hayley (Krista Warner).
In fact, it looked like at one point they were even going to give things another go, only for their shared passion for their work to ruin it.
With Heller a defence attorney and Maggie in large part a prosecutor, they fell on separate sides of the argument, which was trouble when Heller’s work effectively unwound a year-long investigation into another case by Maggie.
But it’s clear this wasn’t entirely over between them, and with Maggie now working on a dangerous case involving prosecuting traffickers, they could soon need each other more than ever.
Which became obvious in the final moments of the season when, looking for some downtime, Heller went surfing while a mystery man with a tattoo on his arm looked on.
Guess we’ll find out if they’re connected if a second season gets the green light…
