How To Sell Chicken Eggs On Facebook Marketplace

How To Sell Your Backyard Chicken Eggs

Congratulations on being showered with plenty of farm fresh eggs.

The “abundance of eggs” problem is a good one to have.

Why?

Because it’s a sign that your chickens are happy. If they were stressed or didn’t have sufficient food and water, they wouldn’t lay eggs.

And hey, it never hurts to have extra eggs to give as gifts to friends and family.

But after a while, there are only so many eggs you can use for personal use. This is when you start considering selling the extra eggs for money or some other sort of barter arrangement.

In this blog, I’ll share with you 7 proven ways you can sell your fresh backyard chicken eggs.

  • Advertise your fresh eggs on Nextdoor

Nextdoor.com is the free private social network for your neighborhood community. When you sign-up on Nextdoor, you’ll be instantly connected to people in your community.

Nextdoor has a “For Sale & Free” category where you can advertise your fresh farm eggs for sale.

When you put up an ad for sale, write a paragraph or two about you, your chickens or how you take care of them. And don’t forget to take photos of your eggs.

Here is a sample:

“Hey neighbors,

This is Sally from down the street. Hope you’re doing fantastic.

As some of you may know, I’ve been raising chickens for over a year now. It’s been an amazing experience to raise them from baby chicks to full ground hens.

We’ve been blessed with plenty of fresh eggs and I’d love to share them you. Currently, I’m selling the eggs for $5 a dozen.

Most of the money I’ll get by selling the eggs goes into the upkeep of the chickens. I feed them non-GMO, certified organic chicken feed and hen scratch. Plus I spoil them with fresh fruits and veggies from time to time.

If you’re interested in buying eggs, send a private message through Nextdoor or email me at YOUR EMAIL ADDRESS”

As I mentioned before, this is just an example. Feel free to make edits to suit your needs.

The reason Nextdoor is so popular is that it’s spam free and you’re dealing only with your immediate neighborhood.

If people are going to buy fresh eggs from you, they’re probably not going to want to travel great distances to pick up the eggs. Many neighbors would in fact prefer to walk to your place and pick up their eggs.

  • Partner with a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA)

With greater awareness about the benefits of certified organic, non-GMO foods, supporting local farms and eating foods that are in-season, many families are choosing to sign-up for a CSA.

If you haven’t heard of a CSA before, here is how it works. You pay a fee of approximately $25-$35 to get a box of veggies, fruits, eggs and sometimes flowers. Most people get a box every week or every other week.

A big-chain grocery store generally carries factory-farm conventional food that travels from great distances and hence is no longer fresh. With a CSA, you get to experience the fresh, local produce, which is likely to be certified organic.

So what does a CSA have to do with your desire to sell fresh eggs?

The idea here is that you’ll need to find out a local CSA in your neighborhood. Visit Local Harvest or USDA CSA Directory to get a list of CSA(s) in your neighborhood.

Once you identify the CSA, reach out to them and find out if they would be interested in including your backyard farm eggs in the CSA boxes.

You’ll get paid a small amount of money and in exchange, you get to share your beautiful eggs with the community.

Keep in mind that a CSA may be large scale and may need hundreds of dozens of eggs every week to fulfill demand. If you’re surplus is only a few dozen eggs a week, CSA will likely not be a good option for you.

  • Reach out to your local bakery as they almost always need eggs for baked goods

When our flock of 15 hens started laying eggs, we had way more eggs than we needed.

We were already experiencing the deliciousness of fresh eggs in our omelets and home-baked cookies.

We wondered, “Wouldn’t it be amazing if our favorite bakery made cakes and cookies with fresh eggs?”

The owner already knew about us and our chickens as we frequently visited her bakery. We called her up one day, she was more than happy to buy eggs from us.

But there was a problem, she needed 900 eggs a week!

We certainly couldn’t meet that much demand. But if you have a large chicken farm, a local bakery would be glad to buy your fresh farm eggs.

So give it try by calling your local bakery! And if you’re already a customer of theirs, even better.

  • Pin a pamphlet with tear-off strips at coffee shops or libraries

You’ve probably seen pamphlets with tear-off strips at coffee shops and town libraries have advertisement boards. Individuals and local organizations use this method to spread the message about their services and private events.

But how about you telling your community about fresh farms eggs via a pamphlet as well?

Most people care about their health and wellness. They want to consume fresh ingredients.

But the problem is that they don’t know how to find such foods. You can help people consume fresh eggs by advertising your backyard chicken farm goodness i.e. eggs.

You can also get creative here and offer free farm tours on a weekend afternoon. Many people who come for a farm tour will likely buy a dozen or two of fresh eggs.

  • Trade eggs with your neighbors

This selling tip doesn’t involve any money exchange. It’s rather the good old barter system.

For instance, your neighbor may have a fruit tree that’s overflowing with peaches. She’ll be more than happy to exchange her peaches with your eggs. The two of you can make an arrangement that’s fair and makes you both happy.

Other examples include trading of eggs with a handyman for home improvement projects or a photographer for a beautiful set of family photos. The options are endless.

To initiate a barter exchange, visit is Nextdoor.com or Craigslist.org. Put your “fresh eggs for barter” listing on either or both of these websites. And always remember to make it a win-win for you and your neighbor.

  • Share on Facebook (or Facebook Groups)

Facebook is a great place to connect people in your community. Most cities will have dedicated “Buy-Sell Facebook Groups” where you can sell eggs or make a barter arrangement for produce or other goods.

Here is how to find the relevant Facebook group in your community to share your “fresh eggs for sale” information.

  1. Log into your Facebook account and search for “[Your City Name] farming” in the top left-hand corner. This should generate a bunch of search results.
  2. Scroll down to the section on “Groups.” Browse through the relevant groups and send a request to join the group.
  3. Once the Facebook group admin accepts your invitation to join, head over to that Facebook group and let people know that you have eggs for sale.

Be polite and friendly. Tell people a story about you, your chickens and their beautiful eggs. Let them know a reasonable price for your eggs (anywhere from $4-$7 a dozen).

People will be delighted to get the eggs from you.

  1. You can send a Facebook private message to people that are interested in the eggs and provide them with your address and other relevant contact information so they can come and pick-up the eggs.

Alternatively, if you prefer, you can deliver the eggs but don’t overcommit yourself as this can mean more work for you.

  • Inform bodybuilders, fitness enthusiast or athletes at your gym

According to Wikipedia, a large egg has 6 grams of protein. Bodybuilding.com touts why eggs are so important to your diet and how it can help you build muscle.

This explains why many bodybuilders, fitness enthusiast and athletes are constantly looking for a steady supply of eggs. As a backyard chicken farmer, you can sell your eggs directly to people at your local gym.

If you or another family member already works out at the gym, even better. You’ll already have a relationship with other gym members who would be glad to get the fresh eggs from you on a regular basis.

The most important action for you here is to let people know that you have chicken eggs for sale.

Conclusion:

We’ve covered a lot of ground here and now you’re well on your way to sell fresh farm eggs.

There is great demand for fresh farm eggs, especially from pastured raised hens that are fed non-GMO, certified organic feed. There is also data from Mother Earth News, that confirms that pastured raised eggs have significantly more nutrients.

To summarize, you can be on your way to selling your surplus fresh farm eggs by:

  1. Posting an advertisement on Nextdoor, a free neighborhood community
  2. Partnering with a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA)
  3. Creating a pamphlet with tear-off strips and pinning it at local coffee shops or libraries
  4. Trading eggs with your neighbors for their fruits, home improvement projects or other goods and services
  5. Sharing information about the fresh eggs on Facebook or local Facebook groups
  6. Informing bodybuilders, fitness enthusiast or athletes at your gym
