Are Kindles Included In The Airline Laptop Ban

Laptops, iPads, Kindles and Nintendo 3DS consoles are set to be banned from some flights into the UK.

Downing Street has said that the ban affecting airline passengers travelling to the UK from six countries in the Middle East and north America must be implemented by Saturday.

The restrictions – which means customers will no longer be able to carry laptops and other large electronic devices as cabin luggage – affects passengers on inbound flights from these countries:

  • Turkey,
  • Lebanon,
  • Jordan,
  • Egypt,
  • Tunisia and
  • Saudi Arabia.

It will cover devices which are larger than a typical smartphone measuring 16cm by 9.3cm by 1.5cm, which will now have to go in the plane’s hold.

A DfT spokeswoman said airlines have been told to implement the rules “over the coming days and no later than March 25”.

She added that passengers “should go to the airport with the expectation that the measures are already in effect”.

Low-cost airline easyJet said it introduced the new regime on its flights from Turkey and Egypt to the UK on Wednesday.

What has been announced?

Airline passengers travelling to the UK from six countries in the Middle East and north Africa are to be banned from carrying laptops and other large electronic devices as cabin luggage.

This applies to inbound flights. The UK has some of the most robust aviation security measures in the world the Government keeps this under constant review based on assessment of risk.

What devices are affected?

Under the new arrangements large phones, all laptops, all tablets and e-readers longer that 16cm, wider than 9.3cm and more than 1.5cm deep will be barred.

Most smart phones will be allowed in the cabin, including many common popular handsets such as:

  • iPhone 7 Plus
  • Samsung Galaxy 7 Edge
  • Samsung Galaxy Note 3
  • LG G3
  • Sony Xperia Z2

What are the countries?

Turkey, Lebanon, Jordan, Egypt, Tunisia and Saudi Arabia.

Passengers travelling on these flights should check online with their carrier if they require further information.

Transfer passengers who board a flight on a route affected will be subject to the measures.

Should I cancel my trip? Is it still safe to go to these countries?

These new measures are concerned with flights into the UK. The UK is not stopping direct flights to and from those countries. Those with imminent travel should contact their airline for further information.

Why is this being done?

Downing Street declined to discuss whether the new rules were prompted by specific intelligence, while Transport Secretary Chris Grayling said the Government “will not hesitate to put in place measures we believe are necessary, effective and proportionate”.

Aren’t they doing something similar in America?

Yes. Mr Grayling said Britain has been “in close contact” with the US government “to fully understand their position”.

America has taken the restrictions further and banned all personal electronic devices. A statement from the Department of Homeland Security said: “Evaluated intelligence indicates that terrorist groups continue to target commercial aviation and are aggressively pursuing innovative methods to undertake their attacks, to include smuggling explosive devices in various consumer items.”

Why isn’t the UK following the US and banning all personal electronic devices from the cabin, why only phones, laptops and tablets?

The UK Government says it is confident these measures are “proportionate and effective”.

Which airlines are affected?

Six UK and eight foreign airlines will be affected by the new rules. The UK carriers are

  • British Airways
  • easyJet
  • Jet2.com
  • Monarch
  • Thomas Cook
  • Thomson.

Overseas airlines affected are Turkish Airlines, Pegasus Airways, Atlas-Global Airlines, Middle East Airlines, EgyptAir, Royal Jordanian, Tunisair and Saudia.

What if I need to take my device?

Travellers who want to use a laptop or kindle in one of the affected destinations can either arrange for it to be delivered to their home by post or pack it in a checked bag in the hold.

Can I take items purchased from duty free on board?

Any phones, laptops or tablets larger than the above dimensions will not be allowed in the cabin, regardless of whether they were purchased in duty free.

Will I have to pay extra to check a bag in?

Many passengers hoping to save money by choosing hand luggage-only fares now face extra baggage fees. The amount varies between airlines and destinations, with easyJet charging £13 to £30 for a bag in the hold booked online.

Will my gadgets still be insured?

Passengers should contact their travel insurer before putting expensive devices in checked baggage, as many policies do not cover valuables placed in the hold.

How long will this last?

No time frame has been confirmed in the UK but US authorities said the measures announced there would be in effect “indefinitely”.

When will the ban come into effect?

It is currently unclear, but Downing Street has indicated it will be in the coming days.
