Of all the questions a homeowner should ask herself before diving into a renovation, there is one that will dictate everything else: What’s your budget?
“If you have a great budget, then you can knock down walls and add all of the features that you need to create the kitchen of your dreams,” says IKEA Senior Sales Leader Kathleen Wilber.

The cost-conscious may have to pull back, but this is where IKEA shines. The SEKTION range is extremely flexible and customizable, and IKEA’s designers can work with you to determine what’s possible within your price range.
Plus, it’s easy to update an IKEA kitchen down the line: “As you grow and as your wallet grows, you can always add to the [design],” says IKEA Field Interior Design Leader Barry Reidy. “Our interior can be tweaked and changed according to your needs as you progress in life.”

Here, Wilber and Reidy offer a few tips for making a budget and sticking to it.
✔️ Plan ahead
Before you even open the IKEA Kitchen Planner or step foot in a showroom, invest the time to make a detailed renovation plan. Reidy notes that before you speak to a representative, you should be “very clear about the scope of work, what’s possible, what you can and can not do. That’s going to help you in the long run.”
Planning ahead is also extremely important for predicting costs that you can’t see, like moving plumbing or electric lines. If you want to move your sink under the window or knock down a wall to expand, you have to take into account code restrictions and the permitting process of your municipality, which can become costly.
✔️ Choose materials wisely
Not all finishes are created equal. Wilber notes that installing quartz or granite countertops could double the cost of your project. If money is tight, consider a pre-cut wood or laminate option. You can always install the quartz at a later date when you can afford it.
✔️ Don’t replace every single appliance

Appliances are a major line item in a kitchen remodel, but chances are, your oven, refrigerator, and dishwasher don’t all need to be upgraded at the same time. Consider doing only what’s vital to the overall design, and replace the rest when you have more savings.
✔️ Be on the lookout for special offers
There are typically a few IKEA Kitchen Events every year, with discounts for those enrolled in the free IKEA FAMILY loyalty program. The most recent event offered 10% off kitchen purchases.
✔️ Take advantage of the IKEA Projekt card
The new IKEA Projekt card is specifically for the customer who wants to make a large purchase. It offers 0 percent interest for six months on purchases of $500 or more; 0 percent for 12 months on $1,500 or more; and 0 percent for 24 months on $5,000 or more. After that, a standard purchase APR of 21.99%. Minimum purchase required. Learn more at ikea-usa.com/financing.
